Description
Bearing W.P. Kinsella's trademark combination of "sweet-natured prose and a richly imagined world" (Philadelphia Inquirer), The Iowa Baseball Confederacy tells the story of Gideon Clark, a man on a quest. He is out to prove to the world that the indomitable Chicago Cubs traveled to Iowa in the summer of 1908 for an exhibition game against an amateur league, the Iowa Baseball Confederacy. But a simple game somehow turned into a titanic battle of more than two thousand innings, and Gideon Clark struggles to set the record straight on this infamous game that no one else believes ever happened.

Summary: "The Iow Baseball Confederacy"
Kick _ss book. A fun and interesting read. I read this book 15 years ago. Latest purchase for sibling.
I remember best the character of the father, swearing and pretty crazy. This book mixes reality and fantasy in
unexpected and amusing ways. Its written so well, you dont want to put it down. In essence, I really liked this book. By the way, I just finished "Shoeless Joe" written by the same author. It was very good, similar fantasy and reality mix. Dont get turned off by the movie....the book is so much better!

Summary: "A second experience with Kinsella"
Having a greatly enjoyed Shoeless Joe and being a resident of Johnson County, I was looking forward to diving into this, when I was gifted it by a friend. I love Kinsella's references to the area, and this book especially left me wondering how many of these were fact or fiction. However, while I enjoy Kinsella's appreciation of baseball history and Iowa City, I am grateful this was not my first introduction to the author. The story gets a bit sluggish half way through and the characters mostly one dimensional. There was something which resonated emotionally with Shoeless Joe, but could not be found here. I would recommend this only to a student of baseball.

Summary: "The Iowa Baseball Confederecy plus the Kitchen Sink"
I am a fledgling writer. Recently I pitched one of my novels to an agent and she made the critique that elements of the idea were disparate; in other words, they wouldn't mesh well in a publisher's eyes.
I wonder what her reaction would've been had I pitched a novel combining baseball, time travel, giant Native Americans, a living angel statue that plays right field, Leonardo Da Vinci and the Bible? Does such a novel exist? Indeed it does. The kitchen sink wasn't enough. I think the microwave was also tossed in, which might explain the radioactive nuclear meltdown of the plot in the latter half of the book.
This story's simple fable of an enigmatic baseball league and a legendary 2,000-plus inning game that no one remembers is a great start, but it becomes an unfocused mess that takes the edge off the poignant fairy tale promised in the beginning. Kinsella had an MFA in Creative Writing. If such a plot is a result of his education, I'm glad I forewent a formal education in writing. I learn more what *not* to do by reading books like this.
